Free USGS 7.5 Minute Topographic Quadrangles

National Geographic is allowing everyone to easily download any USGS 7.5 minute topo map in the continental U.S. as a multi-page PDF that can be printed on letter size paper on any printer. These are the same topographic maps that were published by the U.S. Geological Survey for decades, with nice additional features from their much-loved, but discontinued TOPO! software product, including:

  • Page 1 is an index map showing each of the printable quarter-quad maps in their broader context
  • Pages 2-5 are the topo quarter-quads, sized and scaled to print on US-letter size paper
  • Hillshading has been added to help visualize the topography.

NOTE: Since the USGS stopped updating their printed topos decades ago, some of these maps do not accurately reflect the current landscape. For the most detailed and up-to-date maps of popular outdoors recreation areas, we recommend their Trails Illustrated maps

Managed by the largest commercial GIS organization in the world. Over 70,000 data sets from 4,100 organizations.

OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap is built by a community of mappers that contribute and maintain data about roads, trails, cafés, railway stations, and much more, all over the world.

  • Natural and land use features like beaches, forests and farms
  • Places of interests like restaurants, hotels, police stations, churches and museums
  • Transportation features like bus stops, traffic signals and stop signs
  • Populated places like cities, towns, villages and localities
  • Buildings; digitized over 2 million features in New York alone

OpenTopography

The mission of the OpenTopography Facility is to:

  • Democratize online access to high-resolution (meter to sub-meter scale), Earth science-oriented, topography data acquired with lidar and other technologies.
  • Harness cutting edge cyberinfrastructure to provide Web service-based data access, processing, and analysis capabilities that are scalable, extensible, and innovative.
  • Promote discovery of data and software tools through community populated metadata catalogs.
  • Partner with public domain data holders to leverage OpenTopography infrastructure for data discovery, hosting and processing.
  • Provide professional training and expert guidance in data management, processing, and analysis.
  • Foster interaction and knowledge exchange in the Earth science lidar user community.

Terra Populus

IPUMS Terra currently focuses on five kinds of data:

  • Census and survey microdata describing the characteristics of individuals and their families and households
  • Aggregate census and survey data, describing the characteristics of places, including aggregate population characteristics, land use, and land cover
  • Data derived from remote-sensing describing land cover and other environmental characteristics
  • Climate data describing temperature, precipitation, and other climate-related variables
  • Vector-based geographic information system (GIS) data delineating administrative and census unit boundaries

All five data types have an important temporal dimension; most of the data span multiple decades, and some sources reach back to the nineteenth century or earlier. By integrating the most comprehensive global data collections on land use and climate change with the major global collections of population data, IPUMS Terra constitutes a unique international reference collection for investigating transformative changes in the human-environment system.

FAO GeoNetwork

GeoNetwork opensource has been developed to connect spatial information communities and their data using a modern architecture, which is at the same time powerful and low cost, based on the principles of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and International and Open Standards for services and protocols (a.o. from ISO/TC211 and OGC).
